What is the Panchatantra?

The Panchatantra (Sanskrit: เคชเคžเฅเคšเคคเคจเฅเคคเฅเคฐ, "Five Treatises") is one of the world's oldest surviving collections of fables. Written around 200 BC by the great Hindu scholar Pandit Vishnu Sharma, it was originally composed to teach the principles of wise conduct to three young princes.

Through the voices of clever animals โ€” lions, hares, monkeys, crocodiles, crows, and more โ€” the Panchatantra teaches children about friendship, loyalty, strategy, and the consequences of foolish actions.

Translated into over 50 languages worldwide, the Panchatantra has influenced storytelling traditions from Aesop's Fables to the Arabian Nights. At Banyan Tree Books, we bring these timeless tales to life in 6 languages with vibrant illustrations.
